![]() So you’re thinking about moving to Florida? In particular, you want to move to New Smyrna Beach or Edgewater. I totally get it, in my totally unbiased (sort of) opinion. The beachside and riverfront area is paradise and I can’t think of any better place to be. Now, if you are going to move here, there are some things you should know… Florida has NO state income tax!! That’s pretty awesome, isn’t it? Of course, my husband, Kevin, and I moved here from Texas. They also have no state income tax, so it wasn’t nearly as awesome as it would be for those who are used to filing a state return. Also, in case you missed it…Florida summers are hot! With that being said, New Smyrna Beach summers are not as hot as you might think. The reason is that once you get to the beach or river, there is an amazing sea breeze that makes the day oh so comfortable. You will find that spending all day on, in, or near the water is actually quite pleasant. Especially with a nice cool drink in your hand at all times! So when the weather is a little too hot for your liking, always head east to the nearest water. ![]() BUGS. Florida does have a lot of bugs. But…we also have lizards. In case you missed this part of science class, lizards eat bugs. That is all I need to know to realize lizards are my friend. I have even named them all (they are all named Huey, in case you were wondering). Whenever they get into the house, I welcome them with open arms, and they in turn eat all of my bugs. I even have a friend that when Huey gets into her house, she puts out a dish of water for him/her. I suggest that upon arriving in New Smyrna Beach, you make nice with the lizards and they too will take care of you. Okay… here are 3 questions that I never in a million years would have thought I would ask, and now I do ask on almost a daily basis here: 1. What direction is the wind blowing? This is actually more important than you would think. First off, if you jog or ride your bike, you will find it advantageous to start out running/biking against the wind and then on your way home the wind can help you along. (Yes, the wind is that strong). Of course, this only works if the wind doesn’t change directions halfway through your workout (which has happened to me more than once). Knowing the direction of the wind also helps to figure out if the water will be choppy or calm. If the wind is coming out of the North in the winter, it is probably bringing a cool front with it. (Cool, not Cold…despite what locals say, it never really gets cold here). 2. Where is the tide? I live on the river, which like the ocean is tidal, and at low tide we cannot get our boat in or out of our dock. It is very important to not only know where the tide is at when we leave the dock, but also how long before we can get back in. On the beach knowing where the tide is will help you figure out if you can drive on the beach, since a lot of times when the tide is high, they close off the beach to traffic. You should also know whether the tide is coming in or going out so that you will know where to lay out your beach towels. More times than I care to admit, I have been enjoying the day when a wave comes along and wipes out my beach spot. 3. What kind of tan line is that (shirt / dress / shorts / shoes / bathing suit) going to give me? Seriously, I have so many different tan lines that I am starting to resemble a tiger. Enough said on that point. There are plenty of other things that you will learn while living here, but you’re just going to have to move here to find them out. In the meantime, call me at 386.315.4162 or visit my website at www.BuyNSBHomes.com. I will find the home of your dreams and maybe even introduce you to Huey!
