So myself and 3 friends went to the Peck Plaza in Daytona Beach Shores on Sunday, September 11th and climbed that 29 story building 4 times. In case any of you are curious about how many stairs that would be...3,028 stairs!
The climb starts at 8:46 am, which is the exact time that the first tower was hit. We were climbing with 160 other people from all over this area, many of them first responders themselves. EMTs, Police Officers and Firefighters all climbed, only they are much more badass than I ever could be. They all climbed those stairs in full gear! Firefighters’ gear can weigh on average 65 lbs, and some even carried oxygen tanks on their backs!
I will say that seeing all of those brave men and women in all of their gear, climbing all of those stairs in remembrance of that horrific day 15 years ago was overwhelming, and I will admit that I teared up.
This is only the second year that this particular event has been held in Daytona. The event is organized by Scott Hughes, who is a firefighter in Daytona Beach.
It started last year with a text message to friends, which ended up with 60 people climbing stairs last year. This year grew to 160 people!
I can’t wait to see how many come out next year! My friends and I have all decided that we will definitely be doing it again, and I’d love to see all of you out there as well.!
OK, full disclosure...my calves are on FIRE right now! But even though my legs are really not happy with me, I did it, I climbed all 110 flights, and that makes me feel really proud of myself!
