I keep hearing people talk about how they could never live somewhere that doesn’t have four seasons. Anyone who says that Florida doesn’t have the changing of the seasons is only thinking about the traditional four seasons. I’ve been here for long enough to know that we do, indeed, have definite seasons…
SNOW BIRD SEASON
First, there is Snow Bird season. Snowbirds start showing up in November and they usually stay until Easter.
Love them or hate them, they are part of this town and although the first month they are here, they tend to be a little (a lot) aggressive, it doesn’t take long before the laid back atmosphere washes over them and they start to chill out. (Alright…Fine, some of them never chill out, but that’s their problem, and I feel sorry that they never experience New Smyrna Beach for what it is).
LOVE BUG SEASON
Then we have Love Bug season, and yes, that season SUCKS, but it is over quickly; usually 3 weeks. What is not over quickly is the amount of dead bugs on my jeep that I can never seem to clean up. Unfortunately, they do show up twice a year. Once around May and then again around September.
Of course, Florida has Tourist season from May – August. While some of the tourists that come to New Smyrna are from different states, most of them are from Orlando, and they come in on the weekends. boating new smyrna beach floridaEvery. Single. Weekend. In Fact, New Smyrna Beach has been named “Orlando’s Best Beach” 8 years in a row.
For the most part, they are great to hang out with at the bars or on the beach/river, and the only bad thing they contribute to is the crazy amounts of traffic.
But by far the best season of all is the Local’s season. That season is September and October. School is back in session, so no more Tourists and the Snowbirds haven’t left the north yet.
September and October are for us locals only. I personally believe that we should shut off the exits on I-95 and I-4 that lead to New Smyrna Beach and Edgewater for the duration of those 2 months; with of course the one exception of Biketoberfest.
Now Kevin will tell you that Football season should be on this list, but this is about Florida and football encompasses the whole country, so, Sorry Kevin, but Football season just doesn’t make the list.
However, I will say that football season is a lot of fun here in NSB. You may think that we all just cheer for the Florida teams, but that could not be further from the truth.
Nearly everyone here is from somewhere else, and I love that when you go to a sports bar on a Sunday, you will hear every team being cheered on! Hell, we’ve sat at the same table with people that are routing for our competitors, but nobody gets upset with anyone and we all end up having a great time!
