Bob Ross – Who doesn’t love Bob Ross? (That was not a question, by the way. If you do not love Bob Ross, you must surely be evil.) I grew up watching The Joy of Painting every weekend on PBS and Bob had me believing that (A)- I could paint like that if I only had a paintbrush, and (B)- that trees were, indeed, happy. I loved that show and so did my siblings. His voice was so soothing and encouraging, how could anyone not love it and him?
Now imagine my surprise when after moving here, I find out that New Smyrna Beach was home to Bob Ross! And that his workshop is still here! And that you can take a painting class taught the same way that Bob Ross taught you how to paint!
I went into the workshop when I first arrived here and asked them if it really was as easy as he always made it seem. They said “Of Course!” But I didn’t believe them- they clearly had never seen my depiction of a stick figure.
My love of Bob Ross was pulling me toward the workshop though, so, since I knew I wouldn’t do it by myself, I told my Dad about it.
My Dad actually has artistic talent, and he used to watch the show with us, so I knew he would do it. In fact, we ended up bringing along my sister and sister-in-law with us too.
It was a 4 hour class and they walk you through every step along the way. And guess what? My painting actually looked (somewhat) like it was supposed to look! And guess what else? My trees were, indeed, Happy!
Of course I went back and did it again. In fact, it was my Dad that pushed me to do it again since we enjoyed it so much the first time!
We have now gone twice, and the second time was better than the first because now we knew what to expect. Don’t think that’s the last time, either. We plan on going again and again. I think maybe a seascape next time. I can see waves being happy…
